SMALL PRINT:

Now, let’s look for a moment at the small print I would like you to agree to:

1. You strive to become a professional screenwriter.

By ‘professional’ I mean: you will earn money from your writing. It is perfectly kosher to be an amateur writer. Many find pleasure in happily tapping away on the keyboard, without ever seeing the fruits of those efforts. But don’t hope that in the process you might be discovered and become successful. Believe me, it won’t happen.

2. You want to see a film made, based on your screenplay.

Sooner or later you will work to sell the script or get a producer attached. It will have to be ‘a good read’ and have ‘marketable elements’. These are essential aspects, yet they are not the ones that will get (and keep) bums on seats. Only at the end of the development will I recommend prioritising this. First we look this:

3. You want the film based on your screenplay to be a successful film.

No matter how obvious this may sound, I have had clients who lied about it. First, they told me they wanted to make a successful film. Ultimately they just wanted to ‘get a film up’. These are two different things. If you want a script/film to be successful with an audience, it helps to understand how an audience responds.

MORE SMALL PRINT:

As almost all professional consultants, my lawyers won’t let me look at your script unless you sign a release form that will protect me once your movie or a similar one gets made. This shit happens all the time, ask me about it by just mentioning the magic words ‘TIN CAN HEART’ (or you could equally try “WALL-E”. I’ll tell you the story if you don’t already know.
